Biography

Steven is a professor of philosophy and the Director of the Centre on Values and Ethics at Carleton University where he has been teaching since 2002. He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh from 1966-73 and at Simon Fraser University from 1974-2002.  He has also been a visiting professor at a number of universities. His areas of research are philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. Recently, he has done work related to privacy and identifying and identification. He was a long time member of the Board and Executive of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Philosophy, editor of Dialogue, the official journal of the Canadian Philosophical Association and on the selection committee for the Killam Research Fellowships. He has also been on the adjudication committee for the National Newspaper Awards, editorials (2001) and feature writing (2000) and is a past president of the Canadian Philosophical Association. He is currently a Member, College of Reviewers, Canada Research Chairs and was invited to the World Economic Forum at Davos in the Fellows Stream.
